Portfolio

How can I keep my Portfolio updated every day?
If your broker or sub-broker uses an ODIN client, we have developed a utility that you can provide to your broker to email you your transactions in a format that can be easily imported into Investar. Your broker can download the utility from here.

Can I have my Portfolio synced up with my Brokerage Account with XYZ Broker?
This is a great idea, but unfortunately we do not have this as unlike the US, most brokers in India do not provide access to the stock Transaction Data to Third-Party providers.

Oops, I entered a transaction incorrectly. How can I correct it?
You can edit Transactions in your Portfolio using the Trading Diary.

I wanted to view my Portfolio as of a certain date. Can I do that?
Yes. This is a feature unique to Investar. As long as you have entered all your transaction data into Investar, you can view your Portfolio as of any date.

Fundamentals

What is Fundamental Analysis? How is it useful?
Fundamental Analysis is the process of analyzing the Fundamentals of a company. It is normally used for narrowing down a list of companies you want to invest in. You can later use Technical Analysis for deciding when to Buy or Sell the stocks that you have chosen based on their Fundamentals.

Integration Features

How can I view the Charts and Fundamentals of a Stock at the same time? How is it useful?
To view the Charts and Fundamentals simultaneously, click on the Charts button in the Navigation Pane. Then, in the View Main Menu, select the Fundamentals Pane to view both of them simultaneously. Now, if you select any symbol in the Favorite Tree, it will show both Charts and Fundamentals together. If you want to view both of them in Browsing Mode, you can also view the Fundamentals in Overlay format.

What if I want to view the Portfolio and Charts together? How is it useful?
To view the Charts and Portfolio simultaneously, click on the Portfolio button in the Navigation Pane. Then, in the View Main Menu, select the Charts Pane to view both of them simultaneously. Now if you click on a Symbol in your Portfolio, you can view its Chart at the bottom. The chart will also indicate the Buy and Sell icons for your Transactions. This is extremely useful to see how your investments are performing over time.

What is the use of an Integrated Browser?
Apart from Internet Browsing within the application, the Integrated Browser is extremely useful when you want to drag and drop a Stock Symbol directly from your Favorite site in the Browser to the Favorite Tree to add it to your watchlist. In case you want to view its chart before adding it to your watchlist, you can also drag it from your Browser to a Chart Pane (when both of them are visible) to view its chart.

Alerts

What are Portfolio Alerts and Price Alerts? How do they differ?
Portfolio Alerts are alerts that you can set on your Portfolio Holdings. You can set an alert if any Stock Position drops by a certain percent or if the entire Portfolio drops by a certain percent. This is very useful when you want to use sound Money Management principles like the Professional Investors do.

I set an Alert. It should have triggered according to its current Market Price but it did not. Why is that?
The Alerts are triggered only when the market data is updated at the end of day. Because of this, if a stock moves up or down during the day, the Alert will not be generated immediately, it will be generated at the end of day.

Stock Advisor

How can I view the Fundamental and Technical Advice together?
To view the Fundamental and Technical Advice together:

Select the Charts button in the Navigation Pane.

Then, in the View Main Menu, select the Fundamentals to view both of them at the same time.

In the View Main Menu, set the Pane Alignment to Vertical.

Select the Stock Advisor from the Tools menu.

You will now see the Charts of the Stock on the left with the Technical Advice and Fundamentals of the Stock on the right with the Fundamental Advice.

How accurate is the Stock Advisor? Should I trade solely based on its advice?
We try to make every attempt to ensure that the Advice given by the Stock Advisor is accurate. However, no Technical Analysis is perfect. You should not use the Stock Advisor by itself for your investment purposes. Use it for cross-checking a Stock Pick posted by someone or double-check with a second source before investing. A great way to get a second opinion would be to post on the forums on the InvestarIndia site.
